Why?

Wolfang was asking for a behaviour that's neiter before 3.8.1 nor now in rc1 possible? 

While I think it's possible to make changes so his case works, it's too much of a change for the rc. I'm volunteering for 4.0+ (4.1 or 4.5 or whatever) in case there is a demand for it.
