My first attempt would be to switch to GraphicsMagick. I've seen too 
many problems with IM in the past (rendering thumbnails from PDFs, 
processes running at high CPU rates, never ending processes) and don't 
really want to use it if I can avoid it.
Generally speaking, GM is faster, has less bugs, uses less resources 
than IM and doesn't introduce breaking changes in patch level releases.
