The main problem with the usual "link" icon is that it depends on the 
language. In English you might understand the link (pun not intended) 
between a hyper"link" and the "links" in a chain.

The Dutch translation for "Unlink element" in the tooltip is "Koppeling 
verwijderen" (in English: "remove connection"). So it becomes pretty 
hard to associate a piece of chain with a connection.

The procedure in words is also a bit inconsistent:
- "unlink element"
- open "Non-used elements" (why not "non-linked elements"?)
- "create reference"
- "paste element"

How should an editor understand this in practical terms?

There are more icons which are pretty hard to explain to young people. 
At the moment I think most people will still know what a floppy disk is, 
but in a few years the "save" icon will hardly trigger any association 
with young, new computer users.
