I used NNTP quite a bit several years ago. I subscribed in Thunderbird and
enjoyed keeping track of things like that. But now, I need something
web-based because I mostly use my Google Chromebook where Thunderbird is
not an option. Plus, if I use someone else's computer, I want to be able to
quickly look things up with the same interface I'm used to, without having
to install Thunderbird or anything like that.

To answer your question, then, I use Google Groups because (1) it is
web-based, (2) it has a nice interface that includes a "Mark all as Read"
button, (3) I subscribe to other organizations' mailing lists there as
well, so it's nice to see all of the groups/forums/lists at a glance, and
(4) it doesn't make my Inbox explode when I want to occasionally send a
message to a high volume list like typo3-english.
