We have a virtual machine on ESX, 4x 3,2 GHz cores, 4 GB RAM and a SAN 
harddisk with a SLES 10 SP2, PHP 5.2.5.

Yes, thats strange. Does it matter how many categories are displaey? I 
only had one in a catmenu.
