[TYPO3-linux] Typo3 upgrade

Hi,

I'm pretty new to typo 3 and have to transfer a typo3 site from an old server (OpenSUSE 10.3, php 5.2.6, mysql 5.0.45, typo3 4.2.3) to a new server (OpenSUSE 13.1, php 5.4.20, mysql 5.6.12, typo3 6.2.1).

First I made a copy of the site on the old server and upgraded this copy to typo3 4.5.33. This copy seems to work fine. BE/FE login possible.

Next I transfered database and folder to the new server. There I have two problems:
1. BE login not possible
This is probably because of php 5.2.6 -> 5.4.20
Can this be repaired?

2. FE shows wrong special characters 
This is probably because of some latin1 - UTF-8 coding difference
Is there a conversion tool?

When these problems are solved the next step would be an upgrade to 6.2.1
