[TYPO3-linux] New install problems

Hi typo3 people
I d/loaded and installed the 4.6.6 Introduction Package version of typo3,
and can't see the default website. I am running Arch linux (64 bit) on an
i3 pc, so I don't think i have any problems with specs. I am trying to run
the system on a local webserver (not in the root of the webserver) with
PostgreSQL as the database, so it's not the bog-standard configuration.
I ran into a couple of solvable problems at the start (needed to have files
owned by http instead of root, gd and openSSL were missing but are
installed now), and re-ran the installer so it would cleanly install, but
there is definitely no website there.
I followed the instructions from the quick start tutorial, and when I get
to the final instruction (5. Click "Go to your website"), the browser
reports a 'no content in root directory' (or similar) exception. Somewhere
in the install process, I was asked if I wanted to install the Intro
Package or a blank site, and I selected the Intro Package.
I've seen instructions that say I need to download a source code package,
and a 'site' package if I use the tgz instead of the zip file, but I
_think_ this doesn't apply to the Introduction Package version (and in any
event I've now downloaded both with no difference). However these
instructions show screenshots of the files that should be in the main
directory after the install and my installation does not have a media
folder in the main typo3 directory. There are media folders in other
directories (upload is one, from memory), but I'm typing this at work and
can't remember all the locations.
I've also seen instructions at xavier.perseguers.ch that say i should run
sql scripts for postgres compatibility which I haven't done yet. Is this
likely to be the cause of the problem? I had a look in the database;
there were something like 78 tables created by the install process, and
there was an entry in the BE_Users table, so it doesn't look like a
database permissions or connection problem.
The other thing I've noticed is that the screen shots etc all talk about a
1-2-3 process, but the numbers in circles on the installer go to 4.
So, I'm stuck. Any suggestions will be gladly taken on board. :-)
cheers
