[TYPO3-linux] "Login-error or session timed-out" problem on Debian/Apache2/PHP 4.3.10

Hello,

I am new to Typo and this is my first install. I'm installing onto a 
debian sarge machine that is running Apache2 and PHP and runs other PHP 
applications such as Squirrelmail and Gallery without issues.

I've completed the installer and when trying to log in as administrator 
for the first time I am getting the following error:

*Login-error or session timed-out
No user logged in! Sorry, I can't proceed then!
(You must have cookies enabled!)
If your session has just timed-out, you may
click here to re-login.

I got the same error trying to log in from a remote machine and from a 
computer that is on the same network. The debug information included 
below is from when connected via that local machine.

I've searched google and the archives and tried the "doNotCheckReferer" 
option as suggested at
http://lists.netfielders.de/pipermail/typo3-install/2005-November/000045.html

I also tried the "FE Lock IP" setting as was suggest at
http://www.typo3-usa.com/forum.0.html?&view=single_thread&cat_uid=4&conf_uid=3&thread_uid=72

No progress with either of those.

Any other suggestions or ways to trouble shoot further? I set the 
"warning_email_addr" and told it it email me whenever an admin logs in 
and I get the email even though I am getting the session/cookie error 
message.
