The best way would be to get graphicsmagick here:
http://typo3.sunsite.dk/software/linux/graphicsmagick-1.1.6_i386-static-2.tar.gz
and use it instead of ImageMagick. The old 4.2.9 is not better, the
problem is ImageMagick kept changing their API so much over the time
it was very hard to follow, that's why 4.2.9 is considered the least
"quirky". GraphicsMagick does not have that problem.
RHEL4 comes with IM6, which is yet again different from IM5. You can
have both the IM installed through up2date and static IM 4.2.9 and
static GM outta the tarballs - you can even try tweaking various
settings in the installer to get IM6 to work properly in TYPO3. If you
succeed, let me know the config options - I found it easier to build a
static GraphicsMagick ;)
