Anything with a 2.4 (older) kernel will run, with more or less efforts
during installation. Distribution choice is mostly based on personal
preferences of the sysadmin - generally they are all pretty much the
same. Since you have already practiced with RH, I'd try out CentOS3 (3,
not 4!) - I can't tell you anything about Ubuntu, but I have a lot of
production TYPO3 sites on RHEL3, which is the same thing.

You'll have to complete a couple of more steps in TYPO3 install tool -
upgrading the DB structure, etc. Plus, there is no RPM for 3.8.1. At
this time, you are probably better off by taking tarballs and installing
them as the installation docs go. And you are better off with
GraphicsMagick (get a static version from typo3.sunsite.dk).

Google keywords: putty, sshd. ;)
Whether you have to use the VPN client or not depends on whether your
firewall has a "hole" punched for incoming ssh connections.
