Matthew, thanks so much for your reply!

MySQL : 4.0.22
PHP : 4.3.9
apache : 2.0.52
ImageMagick : 6.1.3.2 (strange, the typo docs recommend a MUCH
older version -- 4.2.9... I cannot downgrade!)
I downloaded this thing as well:
typo3_src-3.7.1.tgz,
to be closer to the version I've learned was used for that site.

No its not. I am on my own.
I got a "rar"-ball that contained the www folder plus the mysql MyISAM table
files. Installed the database and tested it: up and running.

It seems like you presuppose that I have typo3 installed. I only have that
tarball (typo3_src-3.7.1.tgz) and still wondering if I have to go through
all steps described here ("Installing TYPO on Gentoo Linux):
http://typo3.org/documentation/document-library/doc_inst_gentoo/
or do I have a shortcut, something like "untar it there, create symlinks..."

Seems like I am still far away from knowing what you say..

This seems done.

Ohh I am looking forward for this moment!
Can I setup my own password? I have no way to get the original one.
