which version of TYPO3 are you using?
this sounds strange in an UTF8 environment, as your special character 
should be available as any orther 'umlauts' like äöü which are no problems.

if you are using older version of TYPO3 with non UTF-8 BE AND database: 
try to update (converting database: http://pi-phi.de/293.html)
