[TYPO3-english] pdf thumbnails how???

OK - I can see the thumbnails in backend if I import through file module 
and not if I upload via FTP - Does anyone know of a plugin that can 
create linklist of PDF downloads with Auto thumbnail creation - OR - how 
do I access the thumbnail in the frontend???
