have a look at http://ug.typo3-nrw.de/mastertemplate.html

the mastertemplate is a predefined configuration (not well looking, but 
working) with a tutorial to understand each part of it.

best used with an empty TYPO3.

After reading the manual you should be able to replace the html-template 
and CSS-File with your own.
