[TYPO3] RTE and Login problems after reboot

Last night there was a power outage and our typo3 server went down when 
the ups ran out. A Linux kernel had to be reinstalled.

Since then we have lost our htmlarea rte (system) and every time a 
change is made to a content element, the system tells us we're not 
logged on (even though the popup window says 'log off' so we must still 
be logged in).

I have tried uninstall/reinstalling the rte and also tried installing 
tinyrte but I still get asked to log in each time I try to save.

We've done another reboot and a controlled apache restart but no 
improvement.

Anyone got any ideas??
