[TYPO3] Access content from Frontend Plugin

Hi,

how can I get content from the database within a frontend plugin?

I tried the exec_SELECTquery functions from DBAL and the pi_exec_query() 
function but neither of them honor neither the visibility settings nor the 
user permissions.
