[Typo3] Extensions Display

Hi list

This is probably a very simple question to answer, but I am new at Typo3 and can't seem to find any documentation to help me with my specific problem.  Basically, I have installed two extensions (the forum and the calendar), and although they show up in the left hand navigation in my admin, when I click on either of them, they basically show me a blank screen in the admin content area.  I thought perhaps I needed to hook them to a page or something like that, but couldn't find a way to do that.  So my question is this- what do I have to do to the extensions after I have them installed to display?  Should it be automatic (meaning when I click on them in the admin left navigation they show up in the admin content area) which would mean something is wrong with my system, or is there another step that I am over looking?  I've been scratching my head on this one for days!
