[Typo3] Only one top level element is allowed in an XML document

The full error message that I can see on screen is

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and 
then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

are the full log files?I tried installing the files from an archive but the 
same fault persists so the error appears to be coming from the database. 
Unfortunately I have no archive copies of the database.When I go to the
