[TYPO3-dev] Poll: Should we keep supporting "global extensions"?

Hello,

I think that having the possibility to have a global extension repository
is a great concept. I also think that having this repository inside the
typo3_src directory is probably not the best place to be, because of the
trouble caused when upgrading TYPO3 core. However, when a new major version
of TYPO3 is available (7.0.0 for instance), not all extensions are already
compatible with that new version, and I would not necessarily upgrade all
my TYPO3 installations at the same time. Therefore, I would probably need a
different global extension repository for each major TYPO3 version.

IMHO, what is really missing to TYPO3 is a kind of meta install tools, that
would allow to easily manage multiple TYPO3 installations based on the same
TYPO3 source. This tool could provide a web interface to:
- Download new versions of TYPO3 and deleted unused versions
- Create new installations based on a given installed TYPO3 version
- List all TYPO3 installations, along with used TYPO3 version
- Upgrade TYPO3 for selected or for all installations, clearing the needed
caches
- Manage global extensions (install, uninstall, upgrade)
- Have one central place to store the list of available extensions (from
TER), instead of needing to upgrade the extension list on each installation.
