May be we should revise this requirement? 4.0 is too old for now, current OSes ship with 5.0 or 5.1 already. 4.1 should be the minimum. We can say something like "while TYPO3 may run on 4.0, we storngly recommend using MySQL 4.1 or newer".

This is not possible if there is a site with over 6000 pages and 4-5 content elements, some of which use flexform data with non-ascii characters. Conversion to utf-8 will break them all. So multiplyDbfieldSize is the only option for these sites.
