[TYPO3-dev] Extension Manager Hanging in beta3 & CVS

Thanks Kari & Georg for the pointers to the various bug reports.  I have 
a bugtracker account but had missed those.

I'm not sure if all of these are related somehow but I added my comments 
  onto #0002587

 From what I can tell PHP seems to take *much* longer to download 
content that is gzip encoded (http://repositories.typo3.org/mirrors.xml.gz)

Given the size of the mirrors.xml file is small would it not be better 
to just have a plain XML response rather than compressed in GZIP, even 
in the future when we have more mirrors I'm guessing the average admin 
would only be selecting a mirror on a few occasions and can therefore 
afford the wait.
