Jepp, I agree with you, Dan.

I think TYPO3 should get rid of most of the old frontend stuff like 
content(default) and use a lean and mean templating system based on 
common templating technologies like Smarty or an intelligent way of 
using PHP for separation between business and presentation logic, 
complemented with the excellent way TemplaVoila works for easy workflow 
between designers and site developers.

What's in my eyes worst about TypoScript is that it requires so much 
learning *only* for TYPO3, because it is so unique/obscure/specific.
