Ok, so one would still have to solve all those problems to write the
"driver". Then your customers graphics designer comes with that fancy new
layout, and it turns out you cannot create it with the available browser...

Nah, I don't see the need (as pointed out by Peter) and the chance
(technically, flexibility, ...) to do it.

After a while you really get the hang of CSS, and then it works as expected.
The small (but admittedly annoying) problems that remain with IE, well,
they'll get solved over time. One way or the other. :)
