[Typo3-dev] Extension/plugin development HOWTO?

OK, a potentially bad question here, but I can't seem to find a good
answer anywhere, even though it should be rather simple. Is there any
good HOWTOs out there? I've tried reading through the docs on typo3.org,
but to be honest, they just don't cut the mustard. There's lots of code
and stuff there, but it doesn't really explain anything, which is what I
want (and need).
So basically, is there someting I've missed in the docs on typo3.org?
I've had a gander through "Creating a basic extension" and "Typo3 Core
APIs", but the former is far too simplistic, and the latter is more a
reference than a learning aid.
So, does anyone know of something useful to me?
