I think that developing all of these new features will take some time, and
in between, bugs should be corrected in the normal branch so that while the
new features are being developed the old extension is still useable.

There is no direcmail in the SF project typo3, it's in (and has always been
I think) in typo3xdev.

Well it should go to TER and upgarede the exising extension once its stable
and can 100% replace the existing extension.
What I mean by moving away the core dependency, is that the file
t3lib/class.t3lib_dmailer.php is part of the core, which I think it should
not be. This is the next big step, to remove the above file from the core
and into the direct_mail extension, thus un-tangling the direct_mail from
the core.
In case I'm not 100% clear, but the CVS repository I created the branch in
is not typo3, but typo3xdev.
Hope I'm clear enough, otherwise lets discuss it in private, just send me an
email.
