It has been discussed already in our last "technical meeting" and we 
agreed to tackle this (see 
http://forum.typo3.org/index.php?t=msg&th=208038&goto=726418&#msg_726418).

So IMO you're good to go (especially if it won't be breaking) and we 
only have to agree on the implementation details (I'll test your patches 
tomorrow again and add some feedback).
