You're correct that it's hardcoded at the moment.
We are planning to improve the image handling quite a bit since it's currently very limited and doesn't support multiple images.
At the same time we're planning to make it more user friendly and intuitive as well as more suited for responsive websites.
But it's probably a good idea to make the improved image editor configurable with editor settings.
Unfortunately the progress is currently blocked by an improvement of general resource handling, so it's hard to say when this can actually happen.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
