I agree quite entirely about this.

It's also one of Digital Clarity Groups notions at the moment.

I think what we need to solve for this to happen is an interface concept that instills the behaviour of dealing with relationships. If we focus strongly on embracing social media more inside the CMS, users will be more socially active. Likewise, if we draw in planning of the relationships, our users will (if we do it well) grasp better such a more holistic view of relationship-building inside the software space. 

I do like the CQ way of campaigns and personas but it's way too restricted in terms of process for our needs. In my opinion, we should do something more generic and flexible than they do.

That's a good metaphor for it. The abstraction is good - we "just" have to deal with it in concrete UI's.

What do you think about the naming? There's a lot happening about that at the moment. Personally, I think CMS is still valid - it just needs to potentially embed both framework thinking, CXM, social media management etc.
