IMHO, the native gettext is faster because of its direct 
C-implementation (but I never run any tests).

The other thing I mentioned gettext is, that it is a wide-spreaded 
technique to localize applications, so a lot of people know it and 
perhaps there are a lot of tools and "best practices".
