[TYPO3-UG US] navigation question

I have a shortcut in my main menu, set to a shortcut in a secondary
level, and several pages there I want to have available in a menu. When
I have a shortcut from the main menu and the several pages in the second
level, they show up as options in the menu, but adding one level deeper
it seems not to work. There must be a simple solution I am overlooking.

Here is a structure (if it doesn't get mungled in email)

home
|
+-----sc
       |
       +-----sc 2014
       | |
       | +-----article 1 (standard)
       | +-----article 2 (standard)
       | +-----article 3 (standard)
       |
       +-----sc 2015
              |
              +-----article 1 (standard)
              +-----article 2 (standard)
              +-----article 3 (standard)
etc

I have been struggling with typo3 for six weeks but determined to use
it. Running 7.4. I have the introduction site module with bootstrap.

If there is a clear guide on typo3 menu navigation anywhere, please
direct me to it!
