Jim, it sounds like you set up a pointer to the new items.  If I 
understand what you are saying, without seeing the site, it sounds like 
you want the main menu|News item to open a page with the News items, but 
it is opening a sub-menu instead.

Try creating a standard page, called News, with a content element, in 
say the Normal column, with the new widget in it. Put this page at the 
top in the menu. and it should open.
