you can turn on the admin panel (page.config.admPanel = 1)
to checkout what typo3 is doing.

 From the header it looks like everything is fine, however
the template cannot be found, or doesn't get parser or......


can you put this in your Typoscript Setup?

page.20 = TEXT
page.20.value = John

and see if it shows up?
