I also think that the option shouldn't be removed.

The question is, where to set the switch

* ok for extended view as default setting
* where to make the switch, userTS requires setting in each user setting
* pageTS would make it global for all users

There would be the possibility to place this setting in
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['BE']['defaultUC']
