I think Ushi demonstrated that we have an overlay problem. :)

On the other hand, there's a Bernhard Kraft extension that would be in a 
way related to this and could be incorporated into Core...

I see it has an additional UI enhancement, the capacity to put any icon 
on a page in the pagetree:
