Don't disagree on this view. Because it's easier to see the goal/result for
what you are going to do when the tasks are small. If the goal is clear and
easy to understand then it's much easier to get motivated to contribute.
And small tasks also make it's easy to ditch team approach and use a workgroup
approach. There are a distinct difference, in a workgroup each person do
his/her task (and fullfill it) without much communication with others, in
a team each and everyone are highly dependent on the others, and are therfore
more complex to work with.
I agree that documentation can make fun.
And I think your approach are a good one for documentation. Maybe you should
think about a kind of documentation repository, where you could upload different
kinds of documentation, and let some rating system and/or comments system
tell which should be official documentation.
I also agree that the HCI topic are complex and big. But there is also a
topic that need a lot of discussion before it can be put into smaller pieces.
