I think it's a little bit more sensible the way it is from a content 
_management_ point of view. Editors, developers and administrators will 
frequently (I wanted to say 'usually'...) perform several instances of 
_the same kind_ of work on multiple pages.

But at the same time I will say I've sometimes felt that the tree 
belongs at the far left...

I couldn't quite tell if you were talking about a feature it would be 
nice to have, or your preferred BE configuration; do you know that this 
is already possible?
