Hello Patrick,

In TYPO3 6.2 FILES offers a little more [1].
It added the register values FILE_NUM_CURRENT & FILES_COUNT:

FILE_NUM_CURRENT - Current file number (starting with 0).
FILES_COUNT - Total file count.

This should at least make the columns calculations a little easier.
