i don't want to block. i will work on a patch for the suggested solution 
myself.
As the motto of 4.4 is "get the last 20%" we should try to make the 
features more consistent. A view to the whole thing helps here.

I'm anyway +1 th this patch by reading, see my comment as additional 
hint for the better solution.
