Speed improvements are welcome in 4.5. If they of course don't break
backwards compatibility or change the user interface.

Agreed.

People wanting new features (even if they are enhancements of current
features) should try to upgrade to the latest release as soon as it is
out. Every 6 months there is a new release anyway.

I am skeptical about the need to backport many stuff to 4.5, but there
are edge cases where it might be worth to take a look, as it would be
with the improvement of the live-search (haven't look at it yet).

Collecting the backported patches "somewhere" seems to be a good
compromise, but as Dmitry stated, we shouldn't have it look too
official, else we loose some of the key benefits (and reasons) for
people to upgrade to newer releases.
