So we all aggree on the fact that some want the numbers, some dont. The 
question is only: what should be the default. And should we have the option 
enablable for the users or just by TypoScript.

I personaly liked the idea best that the user can actualy show or hide the 
numbers. But even this option should be possible to disable. When you have a 
situation where 100 editors use the backend just a couple of times a year 
its important the backend always looks like in the manual and that options 
of changing the view are limited.
