$ICON_TYPES is nothing which the new APIs look at. the new api ships an 
API-Function for doing so - which is sadly broken in version 4.4.0.

The patch finxing the API is already committed and will be in 4.4.1

There's also a patch for integrating an temporarily fallback on 
$ICON_TYPES so that "developers" have time to change...
It's pending in core-list and misses anyones  +1
