I think the RTE is just not made for what you want, and misusing it for 
"content images" is just not the right approach.

In T3 you got a variety of options to place your images, and if you 
combine content elements you can achieve almost any pagelayout you want.

The imagefunctions for the RTE are just (IMO) to place little gifs in 
front of links or other similar things, *NOT* to layout your page

use the RTE for what its meant to: styling text
