in my opinion: Let's give Disqus a try.

A limitation may be that in general you can only have ONE thread
on a page. But I tend to see that more as advantage as it keeps
things simple.

My ideas:

- Let's have that "Activate Comments" button and and then change
  it to "Turn off Comments"
- Store that choice in a cookie to make it permanent. The
  styleswitcher script already offers methods for this.
- Place a link nearby which leads to explanations about this

This way nobody is forced to use comments.

Open questions for me at the moment:
- Is Disqus free of costs for the TYPO3 community?
- Who should set up the account there (docteam?)?
