[TYPO3-dam] Category-based gallery without javascript

Granted, I'm just starting with typo3, but I've spent two days trying to 
achieve this...

I need my site to work both with and without javascript.
The problem is, I want to make updating as easy as possible. Since 
SmoothGallery works on DAM categories, I'd need the second gallery 
(without js) to do the same. It don't need any fireworks here, just 
thumbnails with a link to full-sized photo.

Tested about a dosen galleries and didn't find any good ones that would 
both be based on DAM categories and work without js.
All I've found is weeaar_dam_gallery, but I can't make it look any 
better than it does - showing a single column of thumbnails.

Since there's no barely any) documentation for half the galleries, don't 
know what else I can do. I'd be greatful for any hints.
