[TYPO3-dam] DAM frontend

Hi,

this is just another post about DAM and its frontend plugins and 
functionalities.

Since I need a plugin that can:
- display files from DAM categories
- upload files to DAM
- have secure download
- respect file and category permissions
- search in META data and whole files
- and probably some more things ...

...I did a research in TER and lists to find out what is happening in 
this field.

In a brief I found out this:
- a lot of people are in need of that kind of extension
- a lot of people are willing to contribute
- currently there are 3 extensions in TER that could be used as starting 
point (dam_downloads, dam_frontend, air_filemanager) each of them having 
pros and cons.
- there was a lot of talk about modified extensions, but they are not in 
TER (where are they?)
- DAM itself is again in active development which is really encouraging

So my question is:
What's new on this field?

I'd like to contribute to the most promising project and not create yet 
another DAM plugin...
