While you edit a content field with RTE you'll never see a <media> tag, like 
you don't see a <link> tag too.

Create a file link in RTE, deactivate RTE and edit the field and you see the 
<media> tag. If not, something went wrong.

Could you have a look if the <media> tag was created (see above).
