[TYPO3-dam] DAM META on normal pages?

Is there a specific reason, why TX_DAM records have to be stored in 
media folder?
IMO the ability to store TX_DAM records on normal pages would make the 
system far more versatile in regards to access restrictions, 
import/export a.s.o.

I modified TCA to allowOnNormalPages and this appears to work fine on 
the pure glimpse of things, but I don´t have the specific knowledge 
about the DAM to know which underlying DAM functionalities this would 
affect and disrupt?
