[TYPO3-calendar] calendar not rendering - using fluid

I'm trying to install Cal 1.10.1 on a new Typo3 6.2.15 install using 
Fluid templates, but I can't get anything at all to render on the page. 
I can render other content, but nothing is rendered from Cal.

I've activated fluid in typoscript 
(plugin.tx_cal_controller.activateFluid = 1)
I've disabled all views but list.
I've created one calendar, one category, and 2 events.
I'm not using recurrence.

How can I approach trouble shooting this?
