No, IMHO the easy way (*) should be just to extract one zip and copy all  
your files to the web server using FTP.
This is the way, the most unexperienced "developers" are used to from  
other applications and most of them also don't have shell access.

(*) I'd prefer to have a big "Download TYPO3" button to get source+dummy  
merged and ready to extract (without symlinks and so on). More advanced  
ways (dummy and source with symlinks, not soo prominent on the download  
page) should be not the way a first-time user should have to go.
