Good question. I didn't saw an alternative proposal yet.
Also don't forget that many users use templavoila which comes with an 
own page module.

I'm ok having 2 modules, one for content, one for records. Combining it 
in one view could be too much.

In the agency most people work in list view only, i use both.

And btw - i don't plan to rewrite the complete module, just some 
"cosmetics" like collapse/expand tables, fix bugs with move records etc.
